    JCA 22H

Posted by Stephen Nims on 7th Jun 2017

A few years back, a very well respected local tech/amp-builder suggested that I consider Jet City. He was very impressed with the build quality and that it featured a Soldano design. I eventually picked up a 50H and while I loved the sound, it was a little too loud for my basement playing. I eventually moved to a 20HV and really enjoyed it (especially the effects loop) but missed the two channel switchability. About a month ago, I decided to roll the dice on the 22H. I'm really glad that I did! The effects loop sounds great, and the Soldano growl is something else. I replaced the tubes with JJs within a month and have noticed a more balanced, less harsh sound. Going through a 4x12 cabinet, the head still gets LOUD, but fits my needs better than the 50H. I decided to go with the original Soldano design amp rather than the new voicing/design to honor the early days of Jet City. They are a great company that provides a solid product and tremendous value.

Amp Factory no longer has any 2212c combos in stock anymore but I received one today with the vintage 30 celestion upgrade and all I can say is holy crap why I am not hearing about this amp everywhere. The answer is simple. Jet City does not charge enough for this amp. If they sold it for $800.00 everybody and their brother would have one and be talking about it. But all shameless ass kissing aside . If you play any kind of classic rock to 80 and 90's metal this amp will do it without pedals. With some tweaking of the amp and your guitars you can honestly go from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Van Halen to Black Sabbath to Nirvana to Breaking Benjamin. And to be honest I have not even explored the crunch channel yet. I have a lp with emgs 81/85 set and a Diamond Halcyon all mahogany neck and body with a DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge and a Paf pro in the neck. I hope this helps you make a decision. The key point to getting the tones you want out of this amp are in the bass and mid controls. Set the treble at 6 and the presence at 5 and adjust Bass and Mid to get the sound you are looking for. Trust me this formula works.

Killer sound that doesn't break the bank

Hands down, for the money this amp can't be beat. This thing comes from the factory with awesome rock/metal tones, interacts with pedals well and can accept a wide range of mods if you choose to do so.

Swapping out the preamp tubes really enhances the overall sound of this amp. I have swapped and mixed tubes in this thing several times and so far my fav is jj long plate 12ax7 in v1, electro harmonix 12ax7 v2,v3,v4 and another long plate jj 12ax7 in v5. Also have Mullard el84s in power section. To my ears, this combo really helps with the small amount of highs that can get a little harsh.

So far I love everything about this little powerhouse. Sounds amazing through an orange 212 closed back cab!
